measuring for roller blinds

Some people think there is an art in how to measure for roller blinds, when in fact it is really quite simple. Bloc Blinds offer an Online Consultation Service but you can easily measure the blinds yourself. With Bloc Blinds’ Online Consultation Service you have the additional advantage of being able to see the colour choices and designs from the comfort of your own home. However, many people are satisfied with their online choices and therefore don't require further assistance.

Recess or surface mounted blinds

The first thing to consider when choosing your new blinds is whether you want them on the inside or outside of the window recess. This will depend on your window type.  A blind on the inside of the window is neat and contained within the window recess. Surface mounted blinds are attached to the outer wall of the window when your window has an uneven or shallow recess.

So now you've made the decision on the fitting of the blinds and where on your windows you'd like them, it’s time to measure up. Here are our recommendations on how to measure for Roller Blinds:

How to measure for a recess mounted roller blind (on the inside of the window)

  • Make sure the area is free from any obstructions (hooks, handles or curtain rails etc.)
  • Measure from where you want the blind to be fitted. Start at the top left to the top right of the window (on the inside of the window)
  • Measure from the top of the window to the bottom (on the inside of the window)
  • Measure the depth of the recess.
  • Decide where you'd like the roller chain to be (on the right or the left) and whether you want the fabric to hang in a standard or reverse roll.

How to measure for a surface mounted blind (on the facing wall)

  • Make sure the area is free from any obstructions (hooks, curtain rails etc.)
  • Measure from the top left to the top right of your window opening (then add additional width this allows the fabric to cover the window opening ie at least 50mm on either side)
  • Measure from the top of the window to the sill (blind height)
  • Decide where you'd like the roller chain to be (on the right or the left) and whether you want the fabric to hang in a standard or reverse roll.
